Lees McRae College

The picturesque campus
of Lees McRae College
enhances the landscape
and downtown area of
beautiful
Banner Elk
NC and
enlivens this sleepy
mountain town.
Lees McRae College is a
private four year
college that is
affiliated with the
Presbyterian Church.
Distinguished among
southeastern schools,
Lees McRae College is
widely known for having
the highest elevation of
any college or
university in the United
States east of the
Mississippi River
located at an
elevation of 3,720 feet
above sea level.
Originally, Lees McRae
was founded in 1899 by
Reverend Edgar Tufts and
was an all female high
school named The
Elizabeth McRae
Institute after the
well respected educator,
Elizabeth McRae. Later,
the
school's major
benefactor, Suzanna Lees
had her name added in
1903. The Lees McRae Institute
was chartered by the
state in 1907. Later,
the high school program
was phased out and the
institute was renamed Lees McRae
College in 1931.
Lees McRae became
an accredited, coed
junior college, awarding
associate degrees. In
1987, the school's
president began making
progress towards
transforming the two
year college into a four
year college and in
1990 Lees McRae was
granted this status.
Today, specific
landmarks on the
Lees McRae campus
enhance the Banner Elk
community. Visitors
and Banner Elk residents alike cherish
the views of the Rock
House and Tufts Tower
with its distinctive
sounding chimes.
Students are awarded
Bachelor's degrees in
the Arts, Sciences and
Professional Studies and
can major in over 24
areas of study
including Wildlife
Rehabilitation and
Wildlife Biology.
Known for its
outstanding cycling and
soccer teams, Lees McRae
College is a place where
many athletes excel.
In fact, the college's
cycling team has
dominated the
National Championship
title for several years.
Visitors to the area can
enjoy the college's
outdoor tennis courts,
which are free to the public.
The courts are available
from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00
p.m.; however if the
tennis team seems to be
practicing, their time
takes priority. To check
for availability,
contact Paul Goode, head
Tennis Coach at
828-898-2547 for information and
availability.
Lessons/clinics and
tournaments are also
offered through the
college.
