| Mountain Top Promotions Craft Show at Banner Elk Elementary |
Date: 7/3 - 7/04
If the popping colors and sparkle of fireworks is not enough to catch your eye, then get excited for some truly amazing and inspiring artwork and craftsmanship at Mountain Top Promotions’ annual 4th of July Craft Show at Banner Elk Elementary School on Saturday and Sunday, July 3 to 4.
“Usually Mountain Top Promotions holds the show at the Great Train Robbery, but this year I’m moving it to the Banner Elk Elementary School field because of its convenience to the Banner Elk parade on Saturday,” said Pat Fay, owner of Mountain Top Promotions and host of the show.
The handmade craft show features free admission and is open to the public from 10 AM to 5 PM Saturday and Sunday.
More than 50 fine artists and crafters traveling from North Carolina, South Carolina, Pennsylvania, Florida, Indiana, Georgia, Kentucky and Virginia will be in attendance, each bringing unique and perfected artwork that is sure to make a great gift or a wonderful treat.
“The food vendors are going to have everything you can think of as well,” added Fay. “Burgers, fish, Mexican food, steak and desserts like funnel cake—you name it they got it!”
Those who attend the show can look forward to all sorts of fine jewelry, including beaded crystal and wire-wrap necklaces and earrings, 14-karat gold pieces, metal and stone cuffs, rings and necklaces and glass pendants, all in various styles and sizes. The show features collections from Chris Helvey of Unicoi, Ga., Clay Tinney of Key Largo, Fla., Susan Stewart of Washburn, Ind. and Janice Lippincott of Easley, S.C., among several others.
If your focus is crafts, be on the lookout for locally handmade maple, oak and cherry furniture; pottery and abstract glass-framed pictures by Collin Lane Pottery; handbags from High Point.; dips and treats from Hickory; oil and water-color paintings by Tom Waldon, Audrey Young and Frederick Marshall; tye-dye clothing by Julie Hardy; hand-carved bears and handmade rocking chairs and end tables from Sylva; feather artwork by Juanita Dodson; metal work, from flowers to free form figures, by Shelly and Bud Swan; and handmade wooden baskets for displaying flowers from Buchanan, Tenn.

| MusicFest N' Sugar Grove at Cove Creek School |
Date: 7/9 - 7/10
A small but wonderful event in its 13th year draws a big crowd and a wonderful lineup of music. This year’s event has four headliners, with Doc Watson as one of the main attractions.
Watson will play Saturday from 9:15 to 10:30 p.m. on the main stage.
The event used to be named for the Grammy Award-winning singer, songwriter and guitar-picker from Deep Gap, but changed its name years ago.
“Doc Watson’s name alone draws a crowd,” Edwards said.
Last year, the event sold out and this year’s lineup is just as good.
Along with Watson, the other headliners are the Carolina Chocolate Drops, Kruger Brothers and Hay Sugar.
The Carolina Chocolate Drops are a trio of musicians that play old-time string music, and were formed after the Black Banjo Gathering (now in Boone) held in 2005 in Asheville. Dom Flemons, Rhiannon Giddens and Justin Robinson mix up what they play, alternating between the banjo, fiddle, guitar, harmonica, snare drum, bones, jug and kazoo.
The Kruger Brothers are a trio made up of brothers Jens and Uwe Kruger, who were born and raised in Switzerland, and bassist Joel Landsburg. They've played internationally for years, bringing an acoustic sound that blends together classical European and American influences.
Hay Sugar is a four-piece bluegrass-country group out of Asheville that mixes banjo, mandolin and three sweet-sounding voices.
Each group brings its own unique style of bluegrass and old-time music to the mountains for the family-friendly festival.
A lot of the groups could also be heard at the annual MerleFest in Wilkesboro, and Edwards said lots of fans of that event come to MusicFest N’ Sugar Grove.
“We get both [out of town folks and locals],” she said. “We also have people who call ahead every year and want their same seats.”
Along with the scheduled performers, there will be a songwriters’ showcase and musicians’ workshop. Money raised from the event will go to preserve the Cove Creek area in Watauga County.
