Horn in the West: Boone, NC
Date: 6/15 - 08/11

The High Country's acclaimed outdoor drama "Horn in the West" returns this summer for its 61st season, but don't expect what you saw last year. This year, they have a totally new cast.

The production will again be directed by Julie Richardson. The script will be similar to last year's adaptation. This time, however, they will tighten up the scene changes and do more with the atmosphere.

Local auditions started on February 11 at 9 AM in the Valborg Theatre on the campus of Appalachian State University.

Horn in the West details pioneer struggles during the Revolutionary War and is a long-standing High Country tradition, attracting actors, technicians and audience members from all over the country.

In addition to local auditions, the show finds actors through the Institute of Outdoor Drama auditions and South Eastern Theatre Conference auditions.

Tickets are $18 for adults and $9 for children. Discounts are available. Check out the website for more information on auditions or to purchase tickets.

Tweetsie Railroad - K-9's In Flight - Frisbee Dogs
Date: 7/21 - 7/29

For nine days, Tweetsie Railroad will host K-9's In Flight Frisbee Dogs. Don't miss these high-energy performances showcasing a team of dynamic dogs in acrobatic freestyle routines. These dogs have dazzled audiences nationwide at half-time shows and on television.

First-come, first-served seating.
Reservations not required.
Show are included with regular park admission.

Grandfather Mountain: The Grandfather Campout

This will be the 28th Annual Grassy Creek Mineral and Gem Show put on by the Parkway Fire and Rescue Station. There will be 72 vendor spots with vendors from across the USA. There will be all kinds of lapidary supplies, gemstones, beads, mineral specimens, fossils, jewelry and just about anything associated with gemstones you can think of. The fire station will be putting on their famous Bar-B-Que on Saturday. There will be food available all week. There will be a silent auction on Saturday with items donated by all the vendors. This will help raise funds for new fire equipment for the station.

Banner Elk Chamber Summer Concert in the Park: Mountain Soul
Date: 8/2 - 8/02

Concert starts at 6:30 PM and is held at the Tate Evans Town Park stage off Highway 194 behind the Bank of America. There will be raffle tickets sold for wonderful prizes and a cash drawing. There will be several food vendors from which to choose or you can bring your own. Come unwind with us, "shake a leg" on the dance floor, listen to great music and socialize with wonderful people. Friendly well-behaved dogs are permitted on a leash.

About the Band: Mountain Soul taps deep Appalachian roots. Bluegrass tones underscore a modern Americana sound. Traditional-based harmonies embellish homegrown stories of love, loss, and coal in a post-TVA South.
Mountain Soul's eclectic arrangements and honest songwriting have meshed to become an exciting new sound in Americana music. Brothers Daniel and Cory Kimbro have continued in the dynamic performance tradition they learned from their parents. Jonathan Maness brings the crucial third part to their brother harmony while incorporating a unique flatpicking guitar style, and Mike Seal's refreshing resophonic and electric guitar stylings complete Mountain Soul's version of Appalachian roots music.

Mt. Mitchell Crafts Fair

Beech Mountain: Contra Dance, BBQ & Beer Garden
Date: 8/4 - 8/04

Grab your dancin’ shoes and come bust a move at our first community Contra Dance on August 4th at 4:30pm (dance starts at 5:30pm). Hoot and Holler’ with the caller and dance to the musical delights of the Zephr Lightning Bolts. Southern style beverages and a s’mores buffet will be offered for your delight. Not much of a dancer? A roarin’ fire will be available to sit by and watch the dance. Gather your friends and family for this Appalachian style hoe-down. Dance will take place at the Town Kite Field and Brick Oven Pizzeria. See you on the dance floor!


Beech Mountain: Crafts on the Green

Beech Mountain is full of talented artisans and we have the event to prove it. Come out to the annual Crafts on the Green to purchase hand made crafts, soaps, candles, and preserves, just to name a few. These are unique and high quality items that you can’t find anywhere else. The craft show will take place August 4th at 9am, and will feature over 40 artists, live music, food, and even a magician!
