Beech Mountain: Sunset Concert - The Harris Brothers
Date: 5/27 - 5/27

Join the Beech Alpen Inn for their first Summer Sunset Concert of the Season. Music will begin at 5pm, and all are welcome. Enjoy your favorite beverage while listening to a local favorite, the Harris Brothers.

The Harris Brothers are what you might call songsters. They can draw from a vast repertoire of American traditional music – “Americana” is often used to describe their style, but the Harris Brothers just call it music. Their sound is heavily influenced by traditional blues and Appalachian mountain music, jazz, country, and rock n’ roll. No matter what the Harris Brothers play, be it originals or old favorites, they have a special way of making the music their own; it’s stripped down, intense, and real, with no gimmicks.

Description
Hear presentations from top nature photographers in the evenings and photograph spectacular scenery and native animals during the day. Images from Friday and Saturday’s photo excursions are entered in an informal contest with winners announced Sunday morning.

The Contest:
The Grandfather Mountain Nature Photography Weekend includes a friendly but competitive contest. Speakers give presentations during the evening sessions, leaving the days free for participants to practice their skills at one of the most spectacular destinations for photographing nature in the East.

Participants will turn in their digital images at 3 p.m. Saturday afternoon on a CD supplied by Grandfather Mountain in the registration packet. Each person selects three images to enter in any combination of four categories (Animals in Habitats, Animals in the Wild, Wildflowers, and Scenics) and two classes (amateur or accomplished).

Images may be touched up using computer software. Be warned that the judges do not look kindly on images that were not taken during the weekend (images of a flower that bloomed in April), contrived images (like placing a zebra on the top of MacRae Peak), or images that have been manipulated to the degree that they violate the spirit of the contest (like bringing the end of a rainbow down in the center of the Swinging Bridge).

You will need to bring (or borrow) a computer to burn your images to CD. Grandfather Mountain can not promise computer time to any participant.

Check in and Registration:
Check in and registration will take place Friday, 3-7 p.m. and Saturday, 8-9 a.m. The location for Friday Check In is MacRae Meadows (gate 3), about 10 yards on the Linville side of the driveway to the Grandfather Mountain Office and 30 yards on the Linville side of the attraction Entrance Gate. In the case of torrential rain, the registration will move to the Nature Museum.

Tickets:
NPW Participant: $115 Pre registration fee covers 3-day park admission, Saturday evening meal, a seat in the auditorium for the programs, and a CD for turning in your contest entries. Family members and guests are welcome with an additional charge:

Guest NPW ticket: $95 covers 3-day park admission, Saturday evening meal, and a seat in the auditorium for the programs.

Guest 3-day park admission only: $30 adult, $15 child. [reg. $45/$21]

Guests for dinner Saturday night: $10

Date: 6/1 - 6/01

Looking for a way to get out of Dodge? Tweetsie Railroad is just the place! We’ve been taking families on a Wild West train ride for over 50 years.

Tweetsie Railroad allows children and families to let their imaginations run wild and discover all sorts of fun. Kids can be a cowboy … an Indian … or an engineer. Families love riding on our famous steam engine, Number 12. She’s listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Just looking at her is enough to take you back.

Hop on board Tweetsie’s Wild West Adventure, on a train pulled by one of our historic coal-fired steam locomotives. It’s a trip back in time complete with Cowboys, train robbers and marauding renegades stirring up trouble. You never know what might happen! Ride it as many times as you want!

Grandfather Mountain: The Remarkable Rhododendron Ramble
Date: 6/2 - 6/17

Time: 1:00 pm - 2:00 pm.

Our staff naturalists can’t wait to share their excitement for the showy rose-lavender Catawba Rhododendron that blooms its way up Grandfather’s slopes throughout the month of June. Join us for special programs designed to help you get the most out of this memorable sight.

The Catawba Rhododendron is abundant all across Grandfather Mountain, from MacRae Meadows at 4,300 feet in elevation to MacRae Peak at 5,845 feet in elevation. Because the shrub abounds across this broad range of elevations, its purple flowers can be enjoyed at each successive elevation. The first blooms appear at the lower overlooks in late May and the display will arrive at the Swinging Bridge by the end of June.

Join us at 1 pm each day to participate in special programs and activities that celebrate this herald of summer. All programs and guided walks are included in the price of admission.

For details, phone 800-468-7325 or 828-733-2013.
